For this project, I am designing a mobile app called Urban Arts, which is based on a completely original art gallery. The gallery focuses on mixed art forms, including contemporary, digital, and experimental pieces, with the aim of appealing to artistic and creative individuals. Although the gallery is original, it is slightly inspired by existing galleries in terms of structure and purpose. The app is primarily designed to be used in-person at the gallery, helping visitors navigate the space and engage more deeply with the artwork.
The main design challenge I am addressing is accessibility, particularly for older users who are more frequently seen visiting art galleries. Through my research, I found that many existing gallery apps are difficult to navigate, visually unengaging, and not designed with all users in mind. Features such as maps are often overly complicated, which can make it harder for visitors—especially those who may be less confident with technology—to move around the gallery comfortably. This creates a barrier to engagement and can negatively impact the overall experience.
Another key issue is that many gallery apps fail to reflect the atmosphere and creativity of the physical space. They often feel overly functional and lack a strong visual identity, which does not match the artistic environment they are representing. As a result, the app does not contribute to the experience and instead feels separate from it.
To address these problems, my design focuses on creating an interface that is both visually engaging and highly accessible. One of my main usability goals is to ensure the app is easy for everyone to use, regardless of age or technical ability. This includes using clear navigation, simple layouts, readable text, and intuitive features that allow users to find information quickly without confusion. By simplifying elements such as maps and menus, the app will support users in navigating the gallery more confidently.
Another key goal is to enhance the overall experience by designing an interface that reflects the artistic nature of the gallery. I aim to use bold imagery, clean layouts, and a carefully selected colour palette to create a strong visual identity that aligns with the gallery’s creative environment. This ensures that the app feels like an extension of the gallery rather than just a tool for information.
Overall, my app aims to improve the gallery experience by making it more accessible, engaging, and user-friendly. By addressing issues such as complex navigation, lack of inclusivity, and weak visual design, I aim to create a platform that supports a wide range of users and enhances their interaction with the space. The final outcome will be an app that not only helps users navigate the gallery but also contributes positively to their overall experience.
